In New Jersey and Staten Island, addressing health and promoting healthy eating have been central to various government initiatives aimed at combating food insecurity and improving public health.

New Jersey Initiatives:

In 2022, approximately 10.7% of New Jersey residents, including 262,260 children, experienced food insecurity, lacking reliable access to affordable, nutritious food.

To tackle this issue, the New Jersey Innovative Healthy Food Retail Initiative was launched. This initiative supports community-led projects that enhance access to healthy food in underserved areas. Between 2024 and 2026, the program plans to provide up to $1.5 million in grants and technical assistance, with individual grants reaching up to $200,000.

Additionally, the New Jersey Food Security Initiative (NJFSI), funded by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, aims to increase equitable access to healthy food for New Jersey families. Launched in 2021, NJFSI conducted over 150 interviews with residents and experts to understand challenges and identify solutions to hunger in the state.

Staten Island Initiatives:

In Staten Island, approximately 11% of residents, equating to about 48,380 individuals, face food insecurity. Additionally, around 14% of Staten Island residents receive food assistance through programs like SNAP, which is higher than the service area average of 8.9%.

To address these challenges, the New York State Department of Health’s Division of Nutrition focuses on creating environments that empower New Yorkers to make healthy eating and physical activity choices.

Furthermore, the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene has implemented programs to increase access to healthy foods in underserved neighborhoods. For instance, the Green Cart program, initiated in 2008, issued permits to street vendors to sell fresh fruits and vegetables in areas identified as food deserts. While the program has expanded access to healthy foods, a 2014 study noted that there were no Green Carts operating in Staten Island.
